Can i underclock the card to lower the temperature?
wow, you should definitely buy a new and more powerful power supply (thermaltake i suggest) and a cpu fan (coolermaster for example) which cools also the gpu.
Also, run gboost when you are playing a game.
http://www.gzero.com/gboost/home.html
I use it all the time while playing although i have a good pc.

56°C in Idle isn't that much... artefact-fails normally came up over ~100°C (only possible when graphiccard is running full power (for example Crysis))
not enough Power could be a reason!!!
there are different programs to over/under-clock your GPU (nvidia/ati) - google for it ! (i use RivaTuner for my ati)
you can also install a Fan-Control program to regulate all your fans inside - speedfan for example http://speedfan.softonic.de - google for it !
..and maybe a temperature-checking program - for example CPUID HW Monitor http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html - or google it

Re: I keep getting artifacts...
I haven't been able to answer here cause my PC completely crashed and Windows wasn't able to start for some reason...
But it's all fixed now, but I wont be playing CoD 4 for a while because I don't want this to happen again.
I have put together a list of components that I think I'll buy in 3 months and I can post it here.
MSI 870A-G54 AM3
AMD Phenom2 X4 955 3,2GHz Black Edition
A-Data 4GB (2x2048MB)1600Mhz Game Series
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 1GB OC
Fractal Design Tesla 650W 80+
1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ
Cooler Master Elite 430
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM
All that and an ESD bracelet that prevents ESD damage to the components when installing them. And a DVD Writer/Reader.
Totally ~ 7000 kr (700 euro)
I'm planning on upgrading the GPU to a 6950 when I can afford it and unlock it to a 6970
